While looking at her daycare options fourteen years ago, Sandy Morris realized there
weren’t any that met her standards. So, she decided to leave her job working in the
St. Paul public school system and started her own day care in the community where
she had grown up. Most quality daycares are too expensive for Sandy’s neighbors,
so she finds ways to provide them with high quality care at a lower cost. If a family
goes through a financial rough patch, Sandy charges only what they can afford. She
does this often at a financial loss to her, but she refuses to turn them away. Teaching
in both English and Spanish, Sandy could move her daycare out of the community and
make a great deal more because the quality is so high. However, she prefers to use
her teaching skills to benefit her community over her own financial gain. Because
of Sandy’s generosity, she was unable to keep up with maintenance to her home and
the city was threatening to close her daycare, which would have left her community
